Kids are learning how to move, how strong they are, and whether being active is any fun — right now.

HeyKids gives them a place to run, jump, climb, carry, get stronger, and have a good time doing it. Kindergarten through 6th grade, coached in small groups on 7th Street.

Why now

These are the years they figure out how to move.

Somewhere between kindergarten and middle school, kids build the physical foundation they carry into everything else. Coordination. Balance. Body awareness. How to sprint, stop and change direction. How to fall and get back up. How much they trust their own body to do a thing they haven't done before.

They're also deciding something quieter — whether moving feels good, or feels like a chore someone makes them do.

These aren't the only years that count. They're just unusually good ones. Kids this age pick up new movement fast, they're not self-conscious yet, and habits set now tend to stick.

So use them. That's the whole idea behind Start Them Young.

The misconception

When parents hear "strength training," they picture the wrong thing.

Usually it's a nine-year-old buried under a loaded barbell. That's not what we're talking about. It isn't even close.

Training for a kid should mostly look like being a kid — with a coach, a plan, and something that gets a little harder each week.

It looks like this:

Run / Jump / Throw / Carry / Crawl / Push / Pull / Squat / Climb / Balance / Play

How they get there

  • Age-appropriate resistance — light loads, bodyweight, and learning the pattern before adding anything
  • Movement challenges and skill work
  • Games
  • Basic strength work
  • Relays
  • Obstacle-style courses
  • Partner and small-group challenges

The part most programs skip

If it's fun now, they'll still be doing it later.

That isn't a soft goal. It might be the most important thing on this page.

A kid who connects exercise with friends, effort, and pulling off something they couldn't do last week is a kid who keeps moving at fourteen. And at twenty-two. And at forty.

A kid who connects it with punishment quits the first chance they get.

So we want them challenged, not punished. Tired, proud, and asking when the next class is.

Who this is for

Not every kid needs to be an athlete.
Every kid should feel confident moving their body.

HeyKids is built for a pretty wide range of kids, on purpose.

The kid who plays three sports. The kid who plays none. The one who's never done anything like this. The fastest kid in the grade, and the one who hangs back at the playground. The one who's fine — and just needs more hours of moving in their week.

Same class. Coaches meet each kid where they actually are and give them something they can do today and something to work toward.

  • Kids who play sports
  • Kids who don't play sports
  • Total beginners
  • Already-active kids who want more
  • Kids who aren't confident movers yet
  • Kids who just need more physical activity in the week

If your kid already plays

Sports are great. A broad movement foundation matters too.

Soccer practice makes a better soccer player. That's what it's for, and it works. Same with baseball, basketball, gymnastics, martial arts — all of it.

What a season of one sport isn't built to do is give a kid a wide base underneath it: climbing, crawling, throwing something that isn't a soccer ball, carrying awkward things, getting stronger in the directions their sport never asks for.

Sports practice teaches the sport. HeyKids works on the mover underneath it.

There's no conflict here. Plenty of our kids do both, and we schedule around the season.

Inside the room

Coached, structured, and louder than you'd expect.

A HeyKids class is small-group and coach-led from the first minute to the last. There's a warm-up, a skill or strength piece, and then something that gets competitive in the good way.

Kids know what's coming. They know what they're working on. They get corrected, and they get encouraged — usually in the same breath.

It's energetic. It is not chaos. There's a difference, and parents can tell within about ninety seconds of watching.

The actual point

What do we want your kid to walk away with?

Not a trophy. Not a six-pack. Not a personal record.

Something more useful than any of that: confidence in what their body can do.

  • Get stronger
  • Move better
  • Try hard things
  • Have fun
  • Want to come back

That's the win.

Real kids, real classes, real parents.

A HeyKids student giving a thumbs up next to his SkiErg score after finishing a set Three kids mid-lunge with kettlebells during a HeyKids class in San Pedro

My son isn’t really a sports kid, so I wasn’t sure if this would be for him. He loved it. He got more confident every week and never felt like he was behind the other kids.

Grant T.

She already plays travel soccer, so I honestly wondered if she needed more training. HeyKids was completely different. It worked on strength and movement she doesn’t get at practice, and she had a blast doing it.

Jamie H.

The first day she told me she didn’t want to go. By the second week she was asking if it was a HeyKids day. That was probably the biggest win for me — she actually started looking forward to working out.

Questions parents ask

Before you sign them up.

Does my child need to play sports?

No. A lot of the kids in HeyKids don't play a sport at all, and the class is built to work for them just as well as it does for the kid who plays three.

Does my child need any fitness experience?

No. Beginners are the norm. Coaches teach every movement from the start and scale it to what each kid can handle today.

Is this CrossFit for kids?

No — HeyKids is age-appropriate youth fitness, not an adult workout with lighter weights. The class is built around how kids actually move and learn: skills, games, challenges and basic strength work, with the difficulty coming from coordination and effort rather than load.

What ages can attend?

Kindergarten through 6th grade.

How long are classes?

One hour, for the current session. Format changes session to session, so check the session block above for the run you're registering for.

Do I need to stay during class?

You're welcome to stay and watch, but you don't have to. Plenty of parents drop off and come back at the hour; plenty grab a spot along the wall and stay the whole time. Both are normal.

What should my child bring?

Athletic shoes, clothes they can move in, and a water bottle. That’s it — we have the rest.

How many kids are in a class?

We cap each session at kids so everyone actually gets coached. When it's full, it's full — we start a list for the next session.

Can my child drop in instead of doing the full session?

For the current session, yes — per class, subject to availability. The full session works out cheaper if you know you're coming regularly.

Do you offer a sibling discount?

Yes. $200 for the first child, $100 for a second, and $50 for each additional child. Mention it when you register and we’ll sort it out on the call.

What if we miss a class, or it isn’t a fit?

If your child comes to the first class and it isn’t for them, tell us and we’ll refund the rest of the session. After that sessions are non-refundable — but if they miss a day, we’ll do our best to fit them into the other class that week.
